BUDDING AUTHORS INVITED TO PUT PEN TO PAPER IN YOUNG WRITER’S COMPETITION

Budding young authors from across the region are being challenged to unleash their creativity with the launch of a creating writing competition in association with the UK tour of A Monster Calls.

Youngsters aged 10 – 25 year with a passion for story-telling are invited to submit an original short story as part of The Monster Writing Challenge, a nationwide hunt for the best young creative writers in each of the locations that the stage show will visit on tour.

The challenge is open to individuals, school groups and community groups with young authors invited to pen stories of no more than 500 words inspired by the themes featured in A Monster Calls which include family, grief, bereavement and hidden emotions.

Playing Newcastle Theatre Royal (Wed 6 – Sat 9 May 2020), Patrick Ness’s piercing novel, A Monster Calls, is vividly brought to life and tells the story of 13 year old Conor. He and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved away, but now his mum is sick and not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye.

One night, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking, It’s come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears.

The boldest, bravest and most creative stories will be selected by the judges with the winning entries brought to life by a member of the cast and showcased across the tour’s social media channels. The authors of the chosen stories will each receive an exclusive goodie bag to celebrate their achievements.

Entries should be submitted to info@amonstercallstheplay.com in either Word of PDF format and must include the author’s full name, age and local theatre from the list of venues that the tour will be visiting. The closing date for entries is Thu 30 Apr 2020.
