The People’s Theatre opens its new Season with Florian Zeller’s acclaimed drama THE SON.
“I don’t know what’s happened… But something has. He’s changed.”
Coming soon to the People’s Theatre in Heaton: THE SON, the internationally acclaimed play by Florian Zeller, translated by Christopher Hampton.
17-year-old Nicolas is going through a difficult phase since his parents’ divorce. He feels unable to live with his mother anymore, so maybe moving in with his father and his new family will help. But what if it doesn’t? What then?
Following Zeller’s award-winning play The Father (adapted into the Academy Award-winning film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, and performed to critical acclaim at the People’s in 2023), THE SON is an instalment in his powerful family series. It is a searing examination of adolescence, depression, and the disruptive dynamics of family life.

With rising conversations around youth mental health and the challenges of communication between generations, THE SON resonates more urgently than ever.
THE SON is the first play in the People’s Theatre’s Theatre Autumn/Winter Season. Other highlights include black comedy HOME, I’M DARLING by The Rivals writer Laura Wade; daft Dickensian caper BLEAK EXPECTATIONS; Agatha Christie whodunnit THE MIRROR CRACK’D; and Christmas Panto THE WIZARD OF OZ.
Tickets are available from the People’s Theatre Box Office on 0191 265 5020 (option 2) and online at www.peoplestheatre.co.uk
