Welcome to SMILE! School of Comedy and Performing Arts where the students have mastered the art of the prat fall, know how to skid on a banana skin and are renowned for their custard pie flinging.

The latest production from Leeds-based Bright Sparks Theatre, a company with a majority Learning Disabled cast, is a festival of frolic, with songs, sketches, and jokes old and new.

Running in the Bramall Rock Void at Leeds Playhouse from 10-11 June, SMILE! School of Comedy and Performing Arts is a show in which having a laugh is a serious business.

John Hudson, Artistic Director of Bright Sparks Theatre, said: “We’re well into rehearsals and our cast and crew are working hard to bring audiences a tip-top show of comedy, dance, drama and magic. The play is set in a school for comedy and performing arts, where Keith Smile, the new clowning and comedy teacher, is having a terrible first day. He keeps getting lost, loses his lunch and isn’t proving popular with Miss Bull, the headteacher. He might be sacked before he’s even got going!

“For this show, we have a core cast of 20, supported by a staff team of ten. Thirty people on stage can be tough to manage in rehearsals, but as we get closer to showtime, everyone in the room is pulling together.

“We guarantee our show will make you laugh. A lot. And you’ll maybe cry a little bit too. A lot of hard work and love is going into this show; and we hope everyone enjoys watching it as much as we are enjoying making it.”

Come join the gang for an education in hilarious entertainment. The talented cast members have been studying hard to bring you a world-class variety show like no other. Will they make the grade? Will they pass with flying colours? Let’s wait and see.

SMILE! School of Comedy and Performing Arts is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund and The Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation.

SMILE! School of Comedy and Performing Arts plays at Leeds Playhouse from 10-11 June. Tickets are available here.
